2023: The Year of Green Hydrogen for Europe and the MENA region |
2023 will be a busy year for the German Energy Solutions Initiative with over 300 events planned worldwide. The geographical focus of next year’s trade missions will shift more towards Europe and the MENA region and energy production will be top of the agenda. This is partly due to the heightened interest in green hydrogen (H2): the number of events concerning hydrogen has doubled compared to 2022. But for H2 production to be ramped up, the generation of renewable electricity must first be increased. This is particularly true for countries close to Germany that are well positioned to be exporters of Green H2, and those that still rely primarily on fossil sources for energy. In all other regions (outside Europe and MENA), next year’s events will concentrate on locally relevant subjects such as grid expansion and modernisation, as well as energy efficiency in buildings and industry. Register now to secure a place on events taking place in the first quarter where you can connect with German companies.

The market for photovoltaic systems is proliferating in industrial settingsin Kenya. But maintenance of these systems presents a big challenge to plant operators – particularly in remote regions. Now, a start-up from Karlsruhe in Germany has come up with a solution. With the help of the RES Programme, EcoPhi GmbH is gaining a foothold in the Kenyan market with remote monitoring software that enables operators to check over their equipment continuously and troubleshoot. The “plug and play” system, which can be easily connected to existing installations, also optimises outputs, decreases maintenance time and increases overall product lifetime. The start-up is now bringing these advantages to the rapidly growing Kenyan market, for both large solar parks and water systems. |

Two years since the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) unveiled its patented solar technology inspired by the wings of a tropical butterfly, the institute has installed 60 MorphoColor® modules on its own façade. The building-integrated photovoltaics system will be a working showcase for the product, supplying the research institute with around 11 MW hours of solar electricity per year. The novel module allows for a variety of tinting effects while maintaining at least 90 percent solar absorption efficiency. |

How should a carbon-neutral, shock-resilient future energy system for Germany be set up and operated? That’s the big question the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have set out to answer. A digital twin of Germany’s future energy system will be developed at their Energy Lab 2.0 that is capable of intelligently networking all types of renewable energy plants from hydrogen and Power-to-X to wind, solar, bio-energy and geothermal, as well as electric charging networks, energy storage and grid operations. It’s a major digital infrastructure initiative from Europe’s largest research infrastructure centre for renewables and sector coupling. |
