BMWK industry event: Demand for green hydrogen is growing |
The market for green hydrogen (H2) is heating up quicker than expected. That was the opening gambit for the annual industry event “International market ramp-up for hydrogen” last month, organised by the German Energy Solutions Initiative. Some 130 small and medium-sized companies attended the event in Berlin to share knowledge and ideas, especially in terms of exporting German technology and importing green H2 from abroad, which would effectively bolster national energy security. By 2045, 5.5 million tonnes of H2 will be produced domestically but an additional 4.9 million tonnes will need to be imported. This amounts to a huge investment opportunity. But despite robust growth, the experts said, banks still needed more confidence in the H2 economy. That’s where the International Hydrogen Ramp-up Programme comes in, the BMWK's initiative to support companies in development projects. The importance of H2 consortiums like TUNol, which promotes green methanol from concentrated solar power, was also emphasised.

September saw the launch of multiTESS, a multifunctional thermal energy storage system developed by the Aachen University of Applied Science at Julich’s new Brainergy Park. The 6-metre-high “chimney” contains a lattice of honeycomb bricks with vertical ventilation ducts, capable of storing temperatures of up to 1000°C. It provides an excellent model both for storing industrial waste heat and feeding low grade heat into district heating networks, and is described as the “missing link” for decarbonising industry. |
