The Project Development Programme: What is it and how to get on board |
A sunny climate, unique natural resources and the widening gap between energy needs and supply make many developing countries fertile ground for renewable energy technologies. The Project Development Programme (PDP) was established within the German Energy Solutions Initiative to promote environmental solutions that are “Made in Germany” in emerging economies. The programme sets up co-operations between German climate technology providers and local businesses and infrastructure partners in select countries, currently in the regions of South and Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. Climate-friendly solutions from smart building technology through to renewable power generation can help these countries transition directly to a cleaner, greener society. In addition to support, advice and networking services, the PDP provides regional businesses with training courses, local workshops and business matchmaking through events such as AHK trade missions and fact-finding missions to Germany.

At the end of 2020, UAC Dairies in Lagos found itself in a tight spot: a 40 percent hike in energy prices meant they had to find ways to reduce production costs. The UAC Foods factory produces ice-cream, snacks and cold drinks, requiring a constant flow of energy. Through the PDP, UAC partnered with Daystar Power Group, a German solar technology provider active in Africa. Daystar installed an extensive 800 kWp solar hybrid system on the roof, as well as inverters and a monitoring system. The new set-up provides the food factory with clean energy during daylight hours (half of its total consumption), saving up to 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. With the new system, UAC anticipates it will save 30 percent on energy costs over a ten-year period. Find out more about how the partnership works and see the PDP project in action. |

A mining area in North Rhine-Westphalia has been chosen as the site for the newly founded Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy (IEG). The IEG will further explore the potential of geothermal energy for Germany with a pilot plant and a state-of-the-art laboratory. In 2022, a 1,500-deep borehole will be sunk into the earth to tap into thermal energy trapped within 350-million-year-old limestone rocks. |

The German Aerospace Centre is coordinating a multi-partner project to test out technological innovations for wind plants and optimise the performance of turbines. Construction has begun on the Krummendeich Research Wind Farm, starting with two 4.2 MW turbines and an array of sensors and LIDAR devices. A third modular turbine will be built to test different components. |
