Electricity prices in the Philippines are currently among the highest in Southeast Asia. Thus is it financially beneficial for businesses with high electricity consumption to become independent of the electricity supplier – at least in part. The high rates of sunlight and solar radiation in the Philippines also mean that photovoltaic, roof-mounted systems a great solution to cover individual energy needs. PV2 Energie GmbH, based in Goch in North Rhine-Westphalia, was one of the first German companies to identify this market segment and to offer an optional leasing model to help its potential customers overcome the hurdle of high initial investment.

PV2 Energie constructed a grid-connected 500 kilowatt peak photovoltaic system on the roof of a production hall belonging to the cold foam mattress manufacturer, plastics producer and automotive supplier Uratex in Muntinlupa City in Greater Manila, as part of the RES Programme of the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) – the German Energy Agency. The operators use the electricity generated and pay a monthly leasing rate to the Philippine subsidiary of PV2 Energie. This has allowed that Uratex to cut its electricity costs and also cut annual CO2 emissions by almost 400 tonnes.

Sustainable success

Participation in four specialist trade fairs, where the German company was able to forge many contacts, was a key component of the marketing strategy. At the opening ceremony, which took place on 25 April 2017 in the residence of the German ambassador Dr Gordon Kricke, the host was able to share some joyful news with the numerous guests from the world of politics and business, as well as media representatives: PV2Energie signed two more contracts on the same day, successfully boosting its business operations in the Philippines.

About the German project partner

PV² Energie plans, builds, finances and operates solar plants in open spaces and on roofs of agricultural, public or commercial buildings. In 2005, the two share-holding associates Chris Hannen and Phillip Küpper began planning and exeucting renewable energy projects. In March 2011, the two entrepreneurs founded PV² Energie GmbH as a vehicle to incorporate their growing business activities – both domestic and foreign – within the framework of a joint stock company (GmbH). PV² Energie was one of the first companies to identify the potential of own-use solar rooftop power plants in the Philippines and has since seen considerable market success with its newly founded subsidiary PV² Energie Philippines.
