Leibniz Rechenzentrum, München
A computer centre with a floor space of more than 1,600 m², fully air-conditioned for the operation of computers, networks, archiving and server systems and associated equipment. Considerable space has been allocated to air-conditioning equipment. The whole installation was realised under the premises of economic operations and saving of resources. As such, heated air from the computer centre is used to heat the rest of the institute and the auditoriums and for the conditioning of admixed outside air, whereby the share of outside air is kept to a minimum volume. Due to irregular peak heat loads also in other rooms of the institute, the innovative technology of temperature management for the building core has been applied. As a result, the close circuit temperature management of floors and ceilings substantially reduces the need for conventional heating and cooling. The energy supply system caters for vast expansions, commensurate with the ca. 2 mega-watts cooling capacity for varying operating stages (i.e. for stepped autonomous time periods). Safety is a prime aspect, and comprehensive fire suppressing facilities were installed for the computer centre. The Leibnitz building is the most prominent section of the building complex: When approaching the research campus Munich-Garching from the southwest, i.e. via the Autobahn A9 or the highway B11, the prominent cube with its translucent metallic surface and impressive dimensions (ca. LxWxH = 36x36x33 m) draws everybodys attention. It has become a hallmark for computational science which has become a core activity and a vital tool for the educational, research and development facilities at this location. The first user of the new building will also become the flagship for the centres computing capacity. The current high-performance processor Bayern, the Hitachi SR8000, will eventually terminate its operational period in 2006 after six years of continuous operation. It is to be replaced by a more powerful processor, the HLRB II (High-performance processor Bavaria II). The commissioning date for the new building is correlated to the installation of the new processor, as the latter cannot be operated in conventional facilities. In the fall of 2004, a committee decided on the acquisition of the new multi-processor from sgi (Silicon Graphics Inc.). It will be installed in two phases, the first to be commissioned by May 2006. Total processing power shall be 33 Tflops/sec. in phase 1 and ca. 70 Tflops/sec. in phase 2 (by mid 2007).

In line with the construction of the new Campus Gummersbach of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences Plüth Regelsysteme is implementing a building automation based on a native BACnet solution. For the new campus the BLB desired a powerful building automation solution that would be cost effective on one hand and independent from proprietary systems on the other. After extensive tests with BACnet-technology the decision was made in favour of the products from Plüth Regelsysteme. The company acts as the contractor and provides the technology while the sister-company Plüth Energietechnik acts as the executing company. Technology and building control systems Three BACnet-controllers type COSMOS 4000 OPEN (B-BC) form the backbone for the whole building automation. They manage about 160 I/O-modules altogether. In total, approx. 1600 physical measuring points for regulation, control and monitoring are implemented in the web-based BACnet building control software COSMOweb. The regulation system covers the whole spectrum regarding heating, ventilation, air condition and even centralized light-control.
