OFFIS is an application oriented research and development institute and centre of excellence for selected areas of Information Technology and its fields of application. Since its foundation in 1991 (Oldenburg, Germany), OFFIS is working together with European industrial and SME partners in research and industrial projects. IT is key for energy supply, distribution and management, especially with a growing renewable energy market. OFFIS supports companies to develop economical and ecological efficient IT solutions for the energy domain. The objective of our cooperations with companies in the energy domain is the automation of the business processes between the participants of the energy market. E.g. the connection of electricity and heat generation through combined heat and power are becoming more prevalent in households. Concepts considering electricity and heat requirements need to be developed for the integration and governing of these power plants. On the other hand, energy consumption of IT itself can in case of e.g. a data center require the energy of a whole power plant. So, another activity of OFFIS in this domain is the development of IT solutions for efficient energy management of server farms. Energy efficient electronic products in e.g. mobile or home applications are a third domain for research and development at OFFIS. Available solutions are CAD-tools for automated design of energy efficient chips. These tool products since 2002 are further developed and distributed by the spin-off company ChipVision Design Systems AG.
